Photosynthesis Research

The Bauer Lab is located in scenic Bloomington, Indiana.  We’re part of the Department of Biology at Indiana University.

Our lab studies photosynthetic bacteria.  Why? Photosynthesis is the greatest business under the sky -- No photosynthesis, no life.  The laboratory interests fall into three categories: (1) The regulation of photosynthesis gene expression by environmental factors such as light and oxygen (2) Origin and evolution of photosynthesis (3) Phototactic behavior of photosynthetic microorganisms.  The two species we study the most are, Rhodobacter capsulatus and Rhodospirillum centenum, two of the most versatile organisms on earth.

For more information on these topics go to the Research section, or click the area of interest to your left for a brief overview of each topic.  If you’d like to follow our work in more detail, check out the Publications section for a list of our most recent work.

Want to meet the people behind the research?  Go to our People page to see a list of Bauer Lab Members, past and present.  Then look at the Pictures to find out what we’re really like.
