Hahn et al have refined existing methods of population genetic analyses to demonstrate how to distinguish among the signatures of positive selection, purifying selection, and demographic expansion. They demonstrate the efficacy of their methods using experimental lineages of bacteriophage T7, suggesting that the methods can work in natural populations. While the methodology is straightforward and remarkably easy-to-follow, it provides an extremely useful demonstration of how population genetic studies using sequences of multiple genes can be done in the future to maximize the amount of information obtained.
