Organisms in changing environments experience stress. I want to understand the context and consequence of different evolutionary solutions to stressful enivronments? My current project asks: Is there an adaptive metabolic response to stress? Does the mode of phenotypic adaptation (i.e. physiological vs. behavioral) affect the response to selection? In other words, when and how does the mechanism of the stress response matter? To date, my research has used physiological and performance-based assays to dissect variation in the thermal stress response of Drosophila. These complex traits are then modeled with function-valued trait analyses to understand evolutionary tradeoffs.

What is the physiological basis of the relationship between temperature and metabolic rate?

Even at low levels, heat stress pushes cells to work harder.

Deleterious effects compound as increasing heat stress threatens homeostasis and cells struggle to survive.
